The Division of Coastal Sciences at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) is offering a fully funded PhD assistantship in seagrass ecosystem ecology. The position is based at the prestigious Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
Research Focus
The PhD student will participate in a funded project titled: “Understanding Drivers of Change in Seagrass Ecosystems to Inform Management of Critical Habitats in the Gulf Islands National Seashore”. The student will be co-advised by Dr. Zachary Darnell and Dr. Kelly Darnell. Research activities will involve:
- Field sampling of seagrass canopy structure, nekton (fish, crabs, shrimp), and environmental parameters across the Gulf Islands National Seashore (Florida and Mississippi).
- Assessing long-term trends and spatial variability in seagrass-dominated habitats.
- Analyzing the response of seagrass and nekton communities to climate change, water quality, and local human impacts.
- Collaborating with federal agencies (such as the National Park Service) to translate research findings into conservation policy.
Funding and Benefits
- Fully funded graduate research assistantship (stipend, full tuition waiver, and health benefits).
- Excellent laboratory and research vessel support at the GCRL.
- Hands-on training in field marine ecology, nekton taxonomy, and seagrass restoration techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
- B.S. or M.S. in Marine Science, Fisheries Science, Coastal Ecology, Biology, or a related field.
- Experience in coastal field sampling, boat operations, and handling of fish and marine invertebrates.
- Familiarity with statistical software (especially R) and GIS mapping tools.
- Demonstrated ability to write scientifically and work collaboratively in a team environment.
How to Apply
