The Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation (LIRRF) and the International Coral Reef Society (ICRS) have announced their International Graduate & Doctoral Research Fellowships (2026–2027 Call) for marine biologists and coral reef ecologists.
Research Focus & Marine Biology Scope
These fellowships support field-intensive marine research at the world-renowned Lizard Island Research Station on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and partner coral reef laboratories worldwide:
- Coral Reef Resilience & Climate Stress: Investigating coral bleaching mechanisms, calcification kinetics, and ocean acidification adaptation in tropical reef ecosystems.
- Reef Fish Ecology & Biodiversity: Assessing fish community dynamics, larval recruitment, and marine protected area (MPA) conservation effectiveness.
- Coral Microbiome & Disease: Exploring host-microbiome interactions, marine pathogen transmission, and habitat restoration strategies.
Fellowship Benefits & Support
- Eligible Recipients: Ph.D. students, Master’s candidates, and early-career postdoctoral scientists in marine science.
- Funding Support: Individual research grants ranging from USD $2,500 to AUD $20,000 for field station bench fees, boat charter, SCUBA logistics, and laboratory consumables.
How to Apply
Applications are submitted online via the official LIRRF and ICRS portals. Applicants must submit a detailed field research proposal, itemized budget, academic CV, and supervisor recommendation letter.
