History and important information of Date palms
It
is considered as staple food. It is observed in some societies, Date palm is used
after every meal. It is rich source of energy. The plant is dioecious. Mostly
dates are cultivated in the land of Arabia, Iraq, North Africa west to Morocco.
After 4 to 8 years of plantation date palm produces fruits. There are varieties
of date cultivars are grown now a days. Date palm seeds are pulled and crushed to
feed the animals. Its oil is suitable for use in cosmetics and dermatology. The
oil contains 36% lauric acid and 41% oleic acid. Date palm seeds contain
0.56–5.4% lauric acid. They can also be chemically treated as a source of
oxalic acid. Date palm seeds are also ground and used as coffee beans or as a coffee
additive. Experimental studies have shown that feeding mice with the aqueous extract
from date cores has an antigenotoxic effect and reduces DNA damage caused by
N-nitroso-N-methylurea. Clusters of bare fruit are used as brooms. Recently,
flower stems have been found to have ornamental value in the homes. In addition
to P. dactylifera, wild date palms such as Phoenix sylvestris and Phoenix
reclinata, depending on region, can also be used for sap. Date palm leaves are
used for Palm Sunday in the Christian religion. In North Africa they are
usually used to make cabins. The mature leaves are also transformed into
carpets, screens, baskets and fans. The treated sheets can be used for the
insulation panel. Dry leaf flowers are a source of cellulose pulp used for
walking sticks, brooms, fishing floats and fuel. The covers are appreciated for
their scent, and their fiber is also used for ropes, thick fabrics and large
hats. The leaves are also used as lulav during the Jewish holiday in Sukkot.
Young date leaves are cooked and eaten like a vegetable, just like the terminal
bud or heart, but removing them kills the palm. The finely ground seeds are
mixed with flour to make bread in times of scarcity. The flowers of the date
flower are also edible. Traditionally, female flowers are the most widely
available for sale and weigh between 11 and 14 grams (300 to 400 grams). Flower
buds are used in salads or ground with dried Date palms to make a spice for bread.

Cultivational area of Date palm Trees
Dates
are an important traditional culture in Iraq, Iran, Arabia and North Africa
west of Morocco. Dates (especially Medjool and Deglet Noor) are also grown in
America in Southern California, Arizona and in southern Florida in the United
States and in Sonora and Baja California in Mexico. The date palms can take 4
to 8 years after planting before they bear fruit and start producing viable
yields for a commercial harvest between 7 and 10 years. Mature Date palms can
produce 150 to 300 lb (70 to 140 kg) dates per harvest season. They don’t all
ripen at the same time, so multiple harvests are necessary. In order to obtain
market-quality fruit, the date clusters must be thinned and sacked or covered
before they ripen so that the remaining fruits grow and are protected from the
weather and animals, such as birds, which also eat them. Date palms need
well-drained deep sandy loam soil with a pH of 8 to 11 (ie alkaline). The soil
must have the capacity to retain moisture. The soil should also be free of
calcium carbonate.
