Postdoc & PhD Positions in Marine Biodiversity & Phytoplankton Ecology at Senckenberg, Germany

The Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (SBiK-F) in Frankfurt, Germany, invites applications for two research positions: a Postdoctoral Researcher in Marine Monitoring Technologies and a PhD Researcher in Phytoplankton Parasitoid Ecology.

Available Positions

1. Postdoctoral Researcher in Marine Monitoring Technologies

The postdoctoral project focuses on developing and validating cutting-edge optical and molecular technologies for marine biodiversity monitoring. The successful candidate will work with long-term ecological time series to track changes in marine ecosystems and contribute to adaptive management frameworks. This position is a 2-year contract with the possibility of extension.

2. PhD Researcher in Phytoplankton Parasitoid Ecology

The PhD project investigates the ecological roles, host-parasite dynamics, and food web implications of parasitoids infecting marine phytoplankton. The candidate will utilize laboratory cultivation of algae and parasitoids, molecular biology techniques, and ecological modeling to understand how parasitism shapes phytoplankton blooms. This position is a 3-year contract.

What Senckenberg Offers

  • Fully funded contracts under the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
  • Excellent research infrastructure, including advanced molecular labs, microscopy facilities, and computing clusters.
  • A highly international, interdisciplinary, and collaborative scientific environment.
  • Tailored career development and training programs through the Leibniz Association networks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • For Postdoc: A PhD in Marine Science, Ecology, Bioinformatics, or a related field, with strong skills in time-series analysis, ecological modeling, or bioinformatics.
  • For PhD: A Master’s degree in Microbiology, Marine Biology, Ecology, or related fields, with hands-on experience in molecular biology or phytoplankton cultivation.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken).

How to Apply

Applications (including a motivation letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact details for two references) must be submitted via the Senckenberg online recruitment portal. Please specify which position you are applying for in your application materials.
