The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) in Bremen, Germany, invites applications from exceptional early-career scientists for its Doctoral (PhD), Postdoctoral, and International Visiting Research Fellowships for the 2026–2027 cycle. As Germany’s sole scientific institute dedicated exclusively to the study of tropical and subtropical coastal and marine ecosystems, ZMT conducts interdisciplinary research on coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, upwelling systems, and tropical fisheries.
Program Overview: Tropical Marine Science & Coastal Sustainability at ZMT
Tropical coastal ecosystems support millions of small-scale fishers and harbor the highest marine biodiversity on Earth, yet face acute pressures from ocean warming, acidification, overfishing, and coastal pollution. ZMT bridges natural and social sciences to provide a scientific basis for the sustainable management and conservation of tropical marine habitats. Fellows collaborate closely with international partner institutions across Southeast Asia, South Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Indo-Pacific.

Priority Research Themes at ZMT Bremen
- Coral Reef Ecology & Ecophysiology: Thermal bleaching resilience, coral-algal symbiosis, carbonate budgets, reef restoration, and ocean acidification impacts studied in ZMT’s state-of-the-art mesocosm facility (MAREE).
- Mangrove & Seagrass Blue Carbon Biogeochemistry: Carbon sequestration rates, submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), nutrient fluxes, trace metal cycling, and sediment microbiology in tropical estuaries.
- Sustainable Mariculture & Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA): Eco-physiological optimization of tropical seaweeds (Eucheuma, Caulerpa), sea cucumbers (Holothuria scabra), bivalves, and tropical finfish in low-trophic aquaculture systems.
- Tropical Fisheries Biology & Stock Assessment: Trophic food-web modeling (Ecopath with Ecosim), small-scale artisanal fisheries dynamics, fish movement ecology, and marine protected area (MPA) connectivity.
- Theoretical Ecology & Social-Ecological Modelling: Agent-based modeling, climate-ocean coupling, coastal hazard adaptation, and marine resource governance.
Eligibility & Candidate Profile
- For Doctoral (PhD) Candidates: An outstanding Master’s degree (M.Sc. or M.F.Sc.) in Marine Biology, Biological Oceanography, Fisheries Science, Aquaculture, Aquatic Biogeochemistry, Ecological Modelling, or Environmental Sciences.
- For Postdoctoral Fellows: A completed Ph.D. in a relevant marine or aquatic discipline, a strong track record of peer-reviewed international publications, and experience in tropical field expeditions or experimental marine ecology.
- For ZMT–NAM S&T Visiting Fellows: Scientists and researchers from developing countries (including India and other Global South nations) holding at least an M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree and affiliated with a national research institute or university.
- Language & Technical Skills: Fluency in English (written and spoken), statistical programming (R, Python, or MATLAB), and readiness to participate in collaborative field campaigns in tropical coastal regions.
Application Procedure
Applicants should review current project-specific PhD and Postdoctoral job advertisements on the ZMT Career Portal and submit a single consolidated PDF comprising a cover letter, CV, publication list, academic transcripts, and contact details of two academic referees.
