PhD Scholarship in Microbial Ecology & Environmental Biogeochemistry (MBLU Group) at Lund University, Sweden

The Department of Biology at Lund University in Sweden invites applications for a four-year fully funded PhD position in Microbial Ecology. The doctoral position is embedded in the Microbial Biogeochemistry in Lund (MBLU) research environment under the supervision of Prof. Johannes Rousk and Dr. Lettice Hicks.

Research Focus & Biogeochemical Scope

Microorganisms drive key biogeochemical cycles in terrestrial and freshwater-adjacent ecosystems. This doctoral project investigates how microbial communities respond to climate stress—such as severe drought and rewetting cycles—and how these responses influence carbon sequestration, nutrient turnover, and ecosystem stability. Key research areas include:

  • Quantifying microbial growth, respiration, and carbon-use efficiency under environmental stress.
  • Analyzing microbial community composition and functional diversity using molecular marker techniques and transcriptomics.
  • Evaluating microbial feedback loops affecting global carbon and nitrogen cycles.

Position Details & Remuneration

  • Position Type: Full-time temporary doctoral employment (4 years).
  • Location: Lund University, SkÃ¥ne County, Sweden.
  • Stipend/Salary: Standard Swedish doctoral student salary scale (including health insurance and social security benefits).
  • Department: Department of Biology (MBLU Group).

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (M.Sc.) or equivalent in Biology, Microbial Ecology, Environmental Science, Biogeochemistry, or related quantitative life sciences.
  • Strong foundation in microbial physiology, ecological data analysis, or biogeochemical laboratory techniques.
  • Excellent analytical skills and fluency in written and spoken English.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online through the official Lund University recruitment portal quoting Reference Number PA2026/2281. Please upload a motivation letter, CV, university transcripts, and contact information for two academic referees before the application deadline of 18 September 2026.
