Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Sciences – University of Basel, Switzerland

Apply Now for a 4-Year Funded PhD Program in Landscape Ecology and Ecosystems Conservation

The University of Basel, one of Switzerland’s leading research institutions, is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD position in Environmental Sciences, focusing on Landscape Ecology and Ecosystems Conservation. This opportunity is open to motivated researchers with a strong interest in biodiversity, conservation biology, and ecosystem management.

About the PhD Project

Hosted by the Department of Environmental Sciences, the successful PhD candidate will join the Landscape Ecology and Ecosystems Conservation research group. The group’s work centers on understanding the complex interactions between nature and society and how environmental policies and ecosystem management can drive positive outcomes.

The PhD project will contribute to ongoing research on Swiss proglacial ecosystems, examining how biodiversity is affected by glacier retreat. Key objectives include:

  • Assessing arthropod diversity in relation to microclimatic conditions and species traits.
  • Mapping current and projected distributions of plant species across glacial forelands.
  • Evaluating ecosystem services, and exploring conservation trade-offs with human land use.

The specific research focus will be tailored based on the candidate’s expertise and interests. The project is part of the broader PrioritICE project, in collaboration with the University of Bern and the University of Milan. Co-supervision will be provided by Prof. Gianalberto Losapio (University of Milan).
