Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Adaptation of Fish Holobionts – Wageningen University, Netherlands

Are you passionate about fish health, environmental microbiology, and molecular biology? Wageningen University & Research (WUR), a world-leading institution in life sciences, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the Environmental Adaptation of Fish Holobionts. This opportunity is ideal for candidates with a strong background in aquaculture, microbiology, molecular biology, or animal ecology/physiology.

📌 Position Overview:

Title: PhD Candidate in Environmental Adaptation of Fish Holobionts
Location: Wageningen University & Research, Netherlands
Application Deadline: 28 April 2025
Interview Dates: 12–16 May 2025
Start Date: To be announced
Employment Type: Full-time, Temporary (4 years)

🔬 About the Research Project:

This PhD project focuses on the interactions between fish, microbes, and environmental stressors like rising water temperatures. It investigates how early-life priming and microbial communities (holobionts) influence fish immunity, stress tolerance, and overall fitness. Using advanced tools in molecular biology, metagenomics, transcriptomics, and microbial community analysis, the research will uncover key mechanisms in fish adaptation to environmental challenges.

You will work within the Aquaculture and Fisheries Group (AFI) under the supervision of Dr. Fotini Kokou and Prof. Geert Wiegertjes.
