The Department of Entomology at the University of Georgia (UGA) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Insect Ecology, based on the Athens campus. This is a 9-month academic appointment starting on August 1, 2026.

Role and Research Scope

The successful candidate will develop a prominent, externally funded research program in insect ecology. Broad areas of research interest include:

  • Aquatic Entomology & River Ecosystems: Investigating the community ecology, population dynamics, and ecosystem functions of aquatic insects (midges, black flies, dragonflies, mayflies) in freshwater streams, rivers, and wetlands.
  • Vector Biology & Public Health: Utilizing departmental facilities like the UGA Black Fly Laboratory to study vector biology, disease transmission, and biological control of biting flies and aquatic vectors.
  • Climate Change & Stream Bioindicators: Examining how warming waters, agricultural runoff, and pollution impact aquatic insect biodiversity, which serves as a vital bioindicator for water quality and river restoration efforts.

Teaching and Mentoring

The appointee will contribute 25% of their time to teaching and mentoring. Expected responsibilities include:

  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in general entomology, insect ecology, or specialized courses in aquatic entomology and freshwater biology.
  • Advising and mentoring MS and PhD students, serving on graduate committees, and supporting undergraduate research projects.
  • Fostering an inclusive, supportive academic environment for students from diverse backgrounds.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Entomology, Ecology, Biology, Environmental Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated track record of research excellence in insect ecology, supported by high-quality publications in peer-reviewed journals.
