The Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) in the United Kingdom, an internationally renowned marine research institute affiliated with the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC / UKRI), invites applications for Postdoctoral Research Fellowships and Marine Science Research Appointments for 2026/27.
About Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML)
Located on the historic southwest coast of England, PML is a global center of excellence in oceanography, marine ecosystem modeling, and biogeochemistry. Working alongside the Western Channel Observatory (WCO) and operating the state-of-the-art research vessel RV Plymouth Quest, PML conducts cutting-edge scientific inquiries addressing marine climate change, ocean acidification, marine biodiversity, and marine plastics.
Primary Scientific Themes & Opportunities
- Marine Ecosystem & Shelf Sea Modeling: Advancing the European Regional Seas Ecosystem Model (ERSEM), coupled physical-biogeochemical models, and simulation of marine food web interactions under climatic warming.
- Biological Oceanography & Plankton Dynamics: Long-term time-series analysis of phytoplankton phenology, zooplankton grazing rates, and biological carbon pump export fluxes in coastal and shelf waters.
- Marine Biogeochemistry & Carbon Sequestration: Air-sea gas fluxes, ocean acidification dynamics, carbonate chemistry equilibria, and benthic-pelagic nutrient coupling.
- Marine Plastics & Aquatic Ecotoxicology: Microplastic and nanoplastic transport mechanisms, bioaccumulation across trophic levels, and ecological risk modeling.
- Marine Earth Observation: Satellite ocean color remote sensing, machine learning algorithms for aquatic chlorophyll detection, and harmful algal bloom forecasting.
Remuneration & Fellowship Package
- Competitive Salary: Annual postdoctoral salaries ranging between £37,500 and £47,000 per annum depending on postdoctoral qualifications and relevant experience.
- Benefits & Support: Generous UK Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) pension, comprehensive paid annual leave, relocation allowances, and private health cover support.
- Research Infrastructure Access: Dedicated high-performance computing clusters, modern analytical mass spectrometry laboratories, flow cytometry suites, and marine mesocosm facilities.
- International Collaboration: Sea-going opportunities aboard national and international research cruises and active integration into EU and UN Ocean Decade initiatives.
Eligibility & Application Procedure
Eligible applicants must hold or be nearing completion of a Ph.D. in Marine Biology, Biological Oceanography, Marine Ecology, Aquatic Biogeochemistry, or Environmental Limnology. Applications require a detailed curriculum vitae, cover letter detailing research interest alignment with PML science groups, and contact details of three academic referees.
