KUFOS Kerala Fisheries & Ocean Studies Research Fellowships 2026

The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), Kochi, India’s first autonomous university dedicated exclusively to education and research in fisheries and ocean sciences, invites applications from talented candidates for Postdoctoral Fellowships, Senior Research Fellows (SRF), and Project Associates under state and centrally funded research schemes.

About KUFOS Kochi

Established in 2010 by the Government of Kerala and recognized by the ICAR and UGC, KUFOS is headquartered at Panangad, Kochi, surrounded by the Vembanad Lake estuarine ecosystem. KUFOS houses specialized faculties in Fisheries Science, Ocean Science & Technology, Ocean Engineering, and Climate Studies, driving state-of-the-art research in tropical brackishwater aquaculture, estuarine biodiversity, marine bioprocessing, and mangrove blue carbon sequestration.

Key Research Thrust Areas

  • Sustainable Aquaculture & Hatchery Management: Seed production and captive breeding of indigenous food fish species including Pearlspot (Etroplus suratensis), Climbing Perch (Anabas testudineus), and Mud Crab (Scylla serrata), along with biofloc and aquaponics system optimization.
  • Fisheries Resource Management & Estuarine Ecology: Continuous monitoring of Vembanad Lake and coastal Arabian Sea fish stocks, GIS-based habitat mapping, and impact assessment of tropical climatic oscillations on pelagic fisheries.
  • Aquatic Animal Health & Disease Diagnostics: Epidemiology of viral and bacterial pathogens in commercial shrimp farming systems, development of probiotic cocktails, and antimicrobial resistance surveillance.
  • Blue Carbon & Mangrove Wetland Restoration: Carbon flux quantification, estuarine biogeochemical cycling, and community-based mangrove habitat rehabilitation along Kerala’s coast.
  • Fish Processing Technology & Valorization: Development of bioactive marine peptides, fish collagen extraction, chitin/chitosan nanoparticles, and biodegradable aquatic food packaging.
