Assistant Researcher Position in Groundwater Hydrogeology & Water Quality Contamination at University of Gothenburg, Sweden

The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, is recruiting an Assistant Researcher in Natural Sciences (Environmental Science / Hydrogeology) for a 7-month full-time research project led by Dr. Philipp Wanner.

Research Focus & Water Resources Scope

The research project focuses on “Artificial groundwater recharge – a shortcut for harmful poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) into groundwater systems and drinking water supplies – can we avoid this?” Key project activities include:

  • Aquifer PFAS Dynamics: Investigating the fate, transport, and mobility of toxic PFAS compounds during artificial groundwater recharge process.
  • Groundwater Quality Protection: Testing water purification filter media, reactive barriers, and hydrogeological modeling to mitigate chemical contamination in drinking water aquifers.
  • Hydrogeological Field & Lab Analysis: Conducting groundwater sampling, column experiments, and hydrochemical modeling in coastal aquifer systems.

Position Details & Benefits

  • Host Institution: Hydrogeology Research Group, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
  • Contract Period: 7 Months full-time position (1 November 2026 to 30 June 2027).
  • Deadline: 6 September 2026.
  • Reference Number: PAR 2026/616.

Candidate Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in Hydrogeology, Environmental Geochemistry, Water Resources Engineering, or Environmental Science.
  • Experience in PFAS analysis, groundwater modeling, hydrogeochemical field methods, or column transport experiments.
  • Proficiency in English.
