Fully Funded PhD Position in Water-Energy-Food Nexus & Circular Water Systems at Wageningen University, Netherlands

Wageningen University & Research (WUR) in the Netherlands is recruiting a fully funded Ph.D. Candidate in Integrated Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus Modeling for Circular Systems.

Research Focus & Water Resources Scope

Transitioning toward climate-neutral food and energy production requires closed-loop circular water management. Key research themes in this 4-year doctoral project include:

  • Integrated Hydro-Economic & Water Modeling: Formulating multi-scale systems models quantifying water, energy, nutrient, and carbon flows in closed-loop production systems.
  • Circular Water & Resource Recovery: Evaluating scenario-based water treatment efficiency, thermal energy harvesting, and nutrient recycling.
  • Systems Engineering & Decision Support: Bridging environmental water technology, agricultural engineering, and circular economy policy.

Funding & Position Summary

  • Host University: Wageningen University & Research, Wageningen, Netherlands.
  • Duration: 4 Years full-time doctoral appointment.
  • Salary: €2,872 to €3,670 gross per month (Dutch Universities CLA scale) plus annual holiday and end-of-year allowances.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Modeling, Systems Engineering, Chemical Technology, or related discipline.
  • Strong background in mathematical modeling, systems simulation, and quantitative data analysis.
  • Full proficiency in scientific English.
