The Helton and Lawrence research groups at the University of Connecticut (UConn) are inviting applications for a fully funded Ph.D. Graduate Assistantship in Freshwater Ecology and Biogeochemistry starting in 2027.
Project Focus & Freshwater Carbon Dynamics
Beavers act as ecosystem engineers by impounding streams, creating wetlands, and modifying stream networks throughout the northeastern United States. This interdisciplinary Ph.D. research project investigates how beaver-modified aquatic ecosystems alter regional carbon cycling, stream metabolism, and greenhouse gas dynamics. Key research focus areas include:
- Measuring greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, CH4, N2O) across beaver ponds, impoundments, and stream channels.
- Evaluating ecosystem metabolism, carbon storage, and organic matter transformation in modified freshwater networks.
- Scaling localized biogeochemical measurements to watershed-level carbon budgets using hydrological modeling.
Stipend & Financial Package
- Annual Stipend: $38,000 to $40,000 per year (Graduate Assistantship support).
- Tuition & Benefits: Full tuition waiver and health insurance coverage provided.
- Start Date: Flexible between January and June 2027.

Candidate Profile & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Freshwater Science, Environmental Biogeochemistry, Aquatic Ecology, Hydrology, or related fields.
- At least 1 year of research experience in aquatic field sampling, gas chromatography, or water chemistry analysis.
- Strong analytical, quantitative, and written communication skills in English.
