The School of Renewable Natural Resources at Louisiana State University (LSU), in collaboration with the USGS Louisiana Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, is offering a fully funded Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistantship in Freshwater Mussel Ecology starting in spring 2027.
Research Focus & Bivalve Conservation Scope
Freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionida) are critical bioindicators and ecosystem engineers in river systems, yet they are among North America’s most endangered aquatic taxa. Supervised by Dr. Michael Kaller and Dr. Thomas Cooper, this doctoral project investigates how water temperature extremes and sedimentation stress influence the physiological performance, shell morphology, and survival of threatened mussel species. Key research areas include:
- Conducting field surveys and thermal tolerance experiments across Gulf Coast river basins.
- Evaluating respiratory and metabolic responses of freshwater bivalves under sediment deposition stress.
- Developing species distribution models and habitat suitability criteria to guide watershed conservation plans.
Stipend & Financial Package
- Annual Stipend: $30,667 per year (guaranteed half-time 20 hr/wk assistantship through December 31, 2030).
- Tuition & Fees: Full 100% tuition waiver for 4 years and covered graduate fees.

Eligibility Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Aquatic Ecology, Environmental Science, or related disciplines.
- At least 1 year of research experience in aquatic field sampling, macroinvertebrate ecology, or physiological testing.
- Strong work ethic in riverine field conditions and proficiency in statistical data analysis.
