Fish lice are every carp and catla farmer’s nightmare. A tiny, flat parasite called Argulus latches onto fish, feeds on blood, leaves open wounds — and opens the door to secondary infections that can wipe out a pond’s profits. Now, an Indian research institute’s nano-formulation against this pest has received one of the strongest validations science can offer: a granted Indian patent.
On 27 August 2026, the ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Barrackpore, was granted Indian Patent No. 600617 for “A Process for Nanoemulsifiable Concentrate Formulations of Hydrophobic Bioactive Molecules” — the technology behind its product CIFRI ARGCURE®, developed to manage Argulus and other fish ectoparasites. Unlike many lab breakthroughs that never leave the shelf, this one already has: ARGCURE was licensed to industry back in 2021 and has since been commercialised twice through Agrinnovate India Ltd.
Here is what the patent covers, how the product works, what it honestly cannot yet promise — and how a farmer can actually get hold of it.

Why fish lice cost farmers so much
Argulus, commonly called fish lice, are crustacean ectoparasites — flat, disc-shaped creatures that attach to a fish’s skin and fins with suction cups, pierce the skin and feed on blood. Infested fish rub against pond walls, stop feeding properly, grow slowly, and carry open lesions that invite bacterial and fungal infections. In severe outbreaks, mortality follows — not from the lice alone, but from the infections they let in.
The scale of the problem is large. Godrej Agrovet, launching its own ICAR-CIFE-linked fish-lice product ArgoRid in January 2025, cited industry estimates that Argulus infections affect nearly 48% of Indian aquaculture ponds and cause an estimated annual loss of USD 62.5 million. That figure is a company-cited industry estimate, not an ICAR measurement — but it underlines why a low-dose, effective treatment matters to pond economics, not just fish health.
How ARGCURE’s nano trick works
The core problem ARGCURE solves is a chemistry one. Many antiparasitic molecules are hydrophobic — they repel water, so they disperse poorly in a pond and need higher doses to reach the parasite. CIFRI’s answer is a nanoemulsifiable concentrate made with a polymeric nanomicelle approach: the active molecules are packaged at nano scale so they disperse efficiently in water even at comparatively low application levels.
According to ICAR, experimental results show ARGCURE is effective against Argulus bengalensis at a low dose compared with conventional formulations. Its application disrupts the parasite’s hatching process, and field evaluations found it performed well under real pond conditions, keeping water bodies parasite-free for a longer duration. The design goal, stated by ICAR itself, is better performance against fish parasites and improved food and environmental safety, by lowering the antiparasite dose that goes into the water.
Note what the patent actually protects: it is the process for making nanoemulsifiable concentrate formulations of hydrophobic bioactive molecules — a platform technology — not just the ARGCURE brand name. That is why the patent matters beyond one product: the same formulation science could carry other water-shy active molecules in future.
From lab bench to farmer’s pond — the real timeline
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| ~2016–2021 | Five years of research plus two years of field trials, as described by then-director Dr B. K. Das at the licence signing |
| 7 July 2021 | Technology-transfer licence signed with Glaucus Agrochem Pvt. Ltd., Kolkata, facilitated by Agrinnovate India Ltd. — a non-exclusive licence for manufacturing and sale for 5 years |
| 11 December 2024 | CIFRI’s Guwahati regional centre and Assam’s Department of Fisheries popularised ARGCURE among tribal fish farmers in Darrang district — 220 bottles of 100 ml distributed to 60 farmers, with training on fish disease management |
| 27 August 2026 | Indian Patent No. 600617 granted for the underlying nanoemulsifiable formulation process |
| August 2026 | Reported as commercialised twice on a non-exclusive basis through Agrinnovate India Ltd. |
ARGCURE was the fourth CIFRI technology to be commercialised, after CIFRI GI Cage, CIFRI PEN HDPE and CIFRI Cagegrow fish feed — a track record that matters, because many institute technologies never find a manufacturer at all.
How a farmer can get ARGCURE — and what to check first
- Confirm the diagnosis. Look for flat, disc-like parasites on skin and fins, fish rubbing against surfaces, red spots or lesions, and reduced feeding. If you are unsure, take samples or photos to your district fisheries officer or nearest fisheries research centre before treating — wrong treatment wastes money and stresses fish.
- Contact the source institutions. Enquire with ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, or Agrinnovate India Ltd. (ICAR’s technology commercialisation arm) about current licensed manufacturers and availability in your state. The original 2021 licence was non-exclusive and time-bound, so confirm who currently supplies the product rather than assuming the 2021 licensee is still the seller.
- Follow the label, not this article. No retail price and no universal dose is published in the official releases — and this post does not invent one. Use only the dose, method and safety instructions printed on the product label supplied by the licensed manufacturer, and ask the supplier about withdrawal periods and compatibility with other pond treatments.
- Treat the whole cycle, not just the adults. Because ARGCURE’s stated action includes disrupting parasite hatching, follow the full recommended schedule — a single splash rarely ends an Argulus outbreak, since eggs already in the pond keep hatching.
- Fix the conditions that invited lice. Overcrowding, poor water quality and stressed fish make reinfestation likely. Combine any treatment with stocking-density checks, water-quality monitoring and quarantine of new seed.
What ARGCURE is — and what it is not
It is a patented, field-tested Indian formulation from a public research institute, licensed to industry and already distributed to farmers — a genuine research-to-market story in Indian fisheries.
It is not a magic cure-all. No published figure in the official releases claims 100% kill, a fixed retail price, or a one-dose eradication. Ectoparasite control always depends on correct diagnosis, correct dose, pond conditions and follow-up treatments. Any seller promising guaranteed eradication from a single application is overselling — check the label and, if in doubt, the institute.
Why the patent matters for Indian aquaculture
India’s inland aquaculture runs largely on small and medium ponds where a parasite outbreak can erase a season’s margin. Imported treatments are often expensive, dosed for other species and climates, or used off-label at unsafe levels. A home-grown, low-dose, nano-delivered formulation — protected by an Indian patent and already moving through Indian manufacturers — is exactly the kind of product the sector needs more of: research built for Indian ponds, priced and supplied through Indian channels.
As CIFRI director Dr Pradip Dey put it when the patent was granted, it is “not merely a recognition of scientific ingenuity, but also an important example of how research can be transformed into solutions that address real-world challenges in fisheries and aquaculture.” For farmers battling fish lice, that transformation is now a product they can ask for by name.
