The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), Kochi, funds its own postgraduate and doctoral students through the KUFOS Merit Scholarship and KUFOS Fellowship — support aimed at giving financial assistance and an incentive to eligible postgraduate students who take their thesis problem as part of the University Research Programme, irrespective of their nativity. If you are planning a fisheries master’s or PhD at KUFOS, this is money you do not have to win from an outside agency: it comes from the university itself, on merit.
KUFOS Fellowships at a Glance
| Fellowship | Who it is for | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Junior Fellowship | Meritorious students admitted to a Master’s degree programme | Rs. 2,000 per month |
| Senior Research Fellowship | Meritorious candidates admitted to a PhD programme | Rs. 13,000 per month |
The university offers five fellowships each for postgraduate and PhD students from each School — so the number of awards scales with the university’s schools, and competition is within your own school and programme.
The One Rule That Disqualifies You
Students who are already receiving any other scholarship, fellowship, or financial assistance from any other source during the same period will not be considered for KUFOS fellowships. If you already hold another award, you cannot stack a KUFOS fellowship on top of it — plan your applications accordingly.
Manappuram Foundation Scholarship: Rs. 4,000 a Month for MBA Students
Alongside the fellowships, the Manappuram Foundation Scholarship supports MBA students at KUFOS: three students from the general category and three belonging to the fisherman community are eligible in each semester, at Rs. 4,000 per month. For MBA students from fishing communities, this is a dedicated route worth asking the university about at admission time.
What This Means for Applicants
- Merit is the gateway: both fellowships go to meritorious students admitted to KUFOS programmes — your admission performance matters as much as your application.
- Thesis alignment matters: the fellowship scheme is built around postgraduate students taking their thesis problem as part of the University Research Programme, so a research plan that fits a school’s programme strengthens your case.
- Check before you count on it: the university’s own scholarship page, checked on 26 October 2026, lists no application deadline and no separate amount for the Merit Scholarship itself — these fellowships are awarded to admitted meritorious students rather than through a separate dated call. Confirm the current cycle’s process with the university before applying.
A Note on Conflicting Figures Online
Some third-party college guides cite different KUFOS figures — for example, a Rs. 14,000 senior fellowship or a per-semester junior amount. This post uses the figures on the university’s own scholarship page (kufos.ac.in/scholarship) as checked on 26 October 2026: Junior Rs. 2,000 per month, Senior Research Rs. 13,000 per month. Where a guide and the university disagree, trust the university — and re-check the page before you apply, since amounts can be revised.
How to Follow Up
- Visit the official scholarship page: kufos.ac.in/scholarship.
- Apply for admission to the KUFOS postgraduate or PhD programme that fits your field.
- Ask the university about fellowship nomination for your school and semester — and declare any other scholarship you hold, since holding one disqualifies you.
