JAMSTEC Japan Deep-Sea Bioscience & Oceanography Research Fellowships 2026/27

The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), headquartered in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan, invites applications from exceptional international early-career researchers for its prestigious JAMSTEC Young Research Fellow (JYRF) Program and Postdoctoral Research Fellowships for 2026–2027. As one of the world’s most elite oceanographic and deep-sea research institutions, JAMSTEC conducts pioneering scientific exploration across the deepest ocean trenches, hydrothermal vents, sub-seafloor biosphere, and global marine-climate systems.

Program Overview: Independent Deep-Sea & Marine Research at JAMSTEC

JAMSTEC maintains an unmatched marine research fleet, including the world’s deepest-diving manned research submersible Shinkai 6500 (capable of diving to depths of 6,500 meters), the deep-sea scientific drilling vessel Chikyu, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs like Urashima), and supercomputing infrastructure (the Earth Simulator). The JYRF program offers promising early-career scientists the opportunity to conduct independent, self-directed research under the mentorship of JAMSTEC senior scientists, with full access to deep-sea samples, cutting-edge analytical laboratories, and research cruises.

Key Research Themes & Priority Scientific Areas

  • Deep-Sea Microbiology & Extremophiles: Under the Institute for Extra-cutting-edge Science and Technology Avant-garde Research of Life (X-star), investigating microbial metabolic pathways, novel enzymes, and adaptation mechanisms of piezophiles and thermophiles in hadal trenches and hydrothermal vents.
  • Deep-Ocean Carbon Fluxes & Biogeochemistry: Ocean acidification, biological carbon pump efficiency in the mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones, methane seep microbial dynamics, and benthic nutrient recycling.
  • Marine Ecosystem Observation & Deep-Sea Biodiversity: Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding of deep benthic fauna, acoustic tracking of pelagic organisms, and assessing human impacts (deep-sea mining, marine microplastics) on abyssal ecosystems.
  • Ocean-Atmosphere Coupled Dynamics & Climate Modeling: Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and marine heatwave forecasting using coupled ocean-climate models on the Earth Simulator.
  • Sub-Seafloor Biosphere & Marine Geosciences: Microbiological and geochemical analyses of cores recovered from the Nankai Trough and oceanic crust through international ocean discovery programs.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Academic Degree: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Marine Biology, Biological Oceanography, Deep-Sea Ecology, Biogeochemistry, Microbial Genomics, Earth Sciences, or Marine Engineering, awarded within 5 years of the application date (or anticipated prior to taking up the fellowship).
  • Research Proposal: Demonstrated capacity to design and execute an innovative, independent research project aligned with JAMSTEC’s strategic research themes.
  • Publication Record: High-impact first-author publications in peer-reviewed international scientific journals and presentation experience at global oceanographic symposia.
  • International Candidates: Researchers of all nationalities are eligible. Working language in JAMSTEC research institutes is English; visa sponsorship and international administrative support are provided.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted through the official JAMSTEC online recruitment portal. Applicants must submit a Curriculum Vitae (CV), a summary of previous research achievements (max 2 pages), an independent research proposal (max 4 pages), publication list, and two reference letters.
