India’s Fisheries Institutes: 20 MCQs Aspirants Must Ace

Every fisheries exam in India — ICAR AIEEA-PG, ARS/NET, state fisheries service exams, CIFE and university entrances — asks the same kind of question again and again: which institute does what, where is it, and when was it set up? The names look alike on purpose. CIFE is not CIFT. CIFA is not CIBA. One letter changes the city, the mandate and the answer.

This set fixes that confusion once and for all. Twenty MCQs on India’s fisheries institutes, each with the correct answer and the revision point behind it, plus a master revision table you can memorise in ten minutes. The images in this post are illustrations.

Master revision table: India’s fisheries institutes at a glance

CIFT — Central Institute of Fisheries Technology Kochi, Kerala 1957 (functioning) Fishing and fish processing technology — the only national centre covering all disciplines in this field
CIBA — Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture Chennai, Tamil Nadu 1 April 1987 Nodal agency for brackishwater aquaculture; experimental station at Muttukadu

NFDB — National Fisheries Development Board Hyderabad, Telangana September 2006 Fisheries development across the country
MPEDA — Marine Products Export Development Authority Kochi, Kerala 1972 (constituted 20 April 1972) Promotion of marine product exports; set up RGCA in January 1996
FSI — Fishery Survey of India Mumbai, Maharashtra Origin 1946 as Deep Sea Fishing Station; renamed FSI in 1983 Survey and assessment of marine fishery resources in India’s EEZ

How to use this table in an exam: first memorise the pairs that examiners love to swap — CIFA/Bhubaneswar vs CIBA/Chennai, CIFE/Mumbai vs CIFT/Kochi, and CMFRI/Kochi vs CIFRI/Barrackpore. Then memorise the three 1987 institutes (CIFA, CIBA, DCFR) and the two 1947-era institutes (CMFRI, CIFRI). Most institute questions fall out of those two tricks.

Exam strategy: how to revise this topic

  • Learn cities first, years second. Most questions give the city or the mandate and ask for the institute — or the reverse. The revision table above is built for exactly that.
  • Watch the similar pairs. CIFE/CIFT, CIFA/CIBA, CMFRI/CIFRI and CIFA’s Cuttack origin are the four traps in this topic. If a question looks too easy, check which letter you read.
  • Anchor on cluster years. 1947 (CMFRI), 1957 (CIFT), 1961 (CIFE), 1972 (MPEDA), 1983 (NBFGR, FSI renamed), 1987 (CIFA, CIBA, DCFR), 2006 (NFDB). Seven anchors cover nearly every year question.
  • Read the mandate words. “Nodal agency for brackishwater” can only be CIBA; “only national centre for fishing and fish processing” can only be CIFT; “Lead Centre on Carp Farming” can only be CIFA.
