Major Research Thrusts & Project Objectives
ICAR-NBFGR is India’s dedicated national repository mandated for the collection, cataloguing, and conservation of the country’s rich fish and shellfish genetic resources. Appointed researchers will be engaged in:
- Whole Genome Sequencing & Transcriptomics: Generating chromosome-level genome assemblies and transcriptomic databases for indigenous commercial finfishes and threatened freshwater species.
- Environmental DNA (eDNA) Surveillance: Developing high-throughput eDNA metabarcoding pipelines for non-invasive biodiversity assessment across river basins, biodiversity hotspots (Western Ghats, Northeast India), and marine protected areas.
- Germplasm Cryobanking: Cryopreservation protocols for fish spermatozoa, blastomeres, and testicular cells to establish live gene banks and ex-situ conservation reserves.
- Molecular Diagnostics & Aquatic Invasive Species: Screening alien invasive fish fauna and monitoring transboundary fish pathogens using rapid molecular diagnostic kits.
Eligibility Criteria & Educational Qualifications
Candidates must fulfill the minimum qualifications prescribed under ICAR guidelines:
- For Young Professional-II (YP-II):
- Master’s degree (M.F.Sc.) in Fish Genetics & Breeding, Fish Biotechnology, Aquatic Animal Health, or Fishery Science.
OR - M.Sc. / M.Tech in Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, Zoology (Fisheries specialization), Biochemistry, or Life Sciences with at least 60% marks.
- Desirable: Experience in next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis, Sanger sequencing, PCR optimization, or fish reproductive cell cryopreservation.
- Master’s degree (M.F.Sc.) in Fish Genetics & Breeding, Fish Biotechnology, Aquatic Animal Health, or Fishery Science.
- For Young Professional-I (YP-I):
- Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Science (B.F.Sc.) or Bachelor’s in Zoology, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or Bioinformatics.
- Desirable: Basic laboratory skills in DNA extraction, electrophoresis, and database entry.
Age Limit & Consolidated Remuneration
- Age Limit: Minimum 21 years and maximum 45 years on the date of interview (relaxation applicable for SC/ST/OBC/Women candidates as per GoI rules).
- Consolidated Stipend:
- Young Professional-II: ₹42,000/- per month.
- Young Professional-I: ₹30,000/- per month.
- Tenure: Initially for 1 year, extendable on satisfactory performance and project duration.
