The Ryan Institute at the University of Galway, in partnership with Teagasc, is offering a fully funded four-year PhD scholarship (Ref: PHD GSO 033-26) investigating sustainable biorefinery systems, circular bioeconomy, and environmental life cycle assessment (LCA). The position will commence on 1 February 2027.
Research Focus & Environmental Scope
Transforming biomass resources into low-emission products, bio-based materials, and renewable energy is central to achieving climate neutrality and protecting aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Supervised by Prof. David Styles, the doctoral researcher will evaluate the environmental footprint and techno-economic feasibility of green biorefineries. Key research focus areas include:
- Conducting comprehensive Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) of grass-based biorefinery value chains.
- Evaluating greenhouse gas mitigation, water quality impacts, and nutrient recycling in circular bioeconomy systems.
- Modeling land-use, ecosystem service trade-offs, and bio-based product replacement of fossil fuels.
- Collaborating with Teagasc agricultural scientists and industry partners across Ireland and Europe.
Stipend & Package
- Tax-Exempt Stipend: €25,000 per year for up to 4 years.
- Tuition Support: Full contribution towards university tuition fees (up to €6,000/year).
- Location: Ryan Institute, University of Galway, Galway, Ireland.
- Duration: 4 Years full-time.
Candidate Requirements
- First-class or upper second-class (2:1) M.Sc. or B.Sc. degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Bioeconomy, Sustainability, Life Cycle Assessment, or related quantitative disciplines.
- Strong analytical, mathematical, and data modeling skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
