Fully Funded PhD Opportunity: Nutritional & Bioactive Value of Algal Proteins at University of Limerick, Ireland

A fully funded PhD position is available at the University of Limerick (UL), Ireland, offering an exciting opportunity to explore the nutritional, functional, and bioactive potential of algal proteins. This research aims to develop sustainable, health-promoting ingredients from edible seaweeds and microalgae.

Project Background and Scope

As the global demand for sustainable food sources grows, algae represent a highly promising and eco-friendly alternative to conventional animal and plant proteins. This interdisciplinary research focuses on the extraction, characterization, and evaluation of proteins and bioactive peptides derived from marine macroalgae (such as Palmaria palmata) and microalgae. The project involves using enzymatic hydrolysis and other advanced extraction strategies to produce protein hydrolysates, which will then be tested for metabolic, antioxidant, and anti-diabetic health benefits in vitro and in vivo.

Key Responsibilities

  • Optimize extraction protocols and enzymatic hydrolysis strategies for marine algal biomass.
  • Isolate, purify, and characterize bioactive peptides and protein fractions.
  • Conduct bioactivity assays to examine potential health benefits (e.g., DPP-4 inhibition, incretin hormone regulation, and antioxidant properties).
  • Analyze datasets and write peer-reviewed scientific publications.
  • Collaborate with researchers within the Health Research Institute and the Department of Biological Sciences.

Funding and Benefits

  • Fully funded position for the duration of the PhD program.
  • Covers postgraduate tuition fees and provides a competitive living stipend.
  • Access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and training in marine biotechnology, biochemistry, and food science.

Eligibility and Qualifications

  • A B.S. or M.S. degree in Food Science, Marine Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biology, Nutrition, or a closely related discipline.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience in protein chemistry, chromatography, or cell culture assays is highly desirable.
  • Strong academic writing skills and proficiency in data analysis.
  • Self-motivated individuals with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should check the University of Limerick Postgraduate Vacancies portal or contact the principal investigators at the Department of Biological Sciences. Please submit your CV, cover letter, and contact information for two academic references.
