NCSCM Chennai Coastal Ecology & Marine Science Fellowships 2026

The National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM), Chennai, an autonomous research institution under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, invites applications from qualified marine biologists, fisheries scientists, and coastal ecologists for Project Scientist (I & II), Senior Project Associate, and Project Associate positions across high-impact coastal habitat conservation and blue carbon programmes.

About NCSCM Chennai

Situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, NCSCM serves as India’s premier scientific authority on integrated coastal zone management. The centre conducts frontline research on the ecology of coastal ecosystems—including mangroves, coral reefs, sea grass beds, and lagoons—driving spatial conservation planning, coastal water quality assessment, and blue carbon dynamics across peninsular India and the island territories.

Key Research Thrust Areas

  • Coastal Wetland Ecology & Blue Carbon Dynamics: Quantifying carbon sequestration rates, soil greenhouse gas fluxes, and habitat viability in mangrove ecosystems and seagrass meadows across the Sundarbans, Gulf of Mannar, and Andaman Islands.
  • Marine Spatial Planning & Fisheries Zoning: Mapping critical fish nursery grounds, migratory routes, artisanal fishing boundaries, and marine protected areas (MPAs) using GIS and remote sensing.
  • Estuarine Ecology & Benthic Biota: Community composition, biodiversity indices, and trophic interactions of benthic macroinvertebrates, estuarine finfish, and shellfish populations.
  • Coastal Water Quality & Marine Ecotoxicology: Monitoring nutrient kinetics, trace metal distributions, microplastic accumulation in marine organisms, and chemical pollution along coastal and island waters.
  • Climate Change Adaptation for Coastal Fishers: Formulating scientific adaptation frameworks, erosion risk models, and ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction strategies for coastal fishing communities.
