Major Research Thrusts & Scientific Scope
CSIR-NIO is India’s flagship autonomous marine research institute operating state-of-the-art oceanographic research vessels (including RV Sindhu Sadhana and RV Sindhu Sankalp). Appointed project staff will contribute to cutting-edge investigations in:
- Biological Oceanography & Plankton Ecology: Microbial loop dynamics, phytoplankton primary production, harmful algal blooms (HABs), and zooplankton grazing interactions in tropical shelf waters.
- Deep-Sea Benthic Ecology & Hydrothermal Systems: Biodiversity assessments of benthic fauna in deep-sea polymetallic nodule fields, oxygen minimum zones (OMZs), and benthic macrofaunal taxonomy.
- Marine Biogeochemistry & Carbon Sequestration: Ocean acidification feedbacks, trace element cycling, blue carbon budgeting in coastal mangroves/estuaries, and marine organic matter mineralization.
- Coral Reef Ecosystems & Coastal Health: Coral reef resilience monitoring in Lakshadweep and Andaman seas, marine biofouling mitigation, and marine environmental impact assessments (EIA).
Eligibility Criteria & Qualifications
Applicants must possess the required educational qualifications from a recognized university:
- Project Associate-I (PA-I):
- Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Marine Science, Oceanography, Marine Biology, Fishery Science, Zoology, Aquatic Ecology, Marine Microbiology, or Environmental Science.
OR - B.Tech / B.E. in Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or Biotechnology.
- Emoluments: ₹31,000/- + HRA for scholars who have qualified CSIR-UGC NET/GATE; ₹25,000/- + HRA for others.
- Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Marine Science, Oceanography, Marine Biology, Fishery Science, Zoology, Aquatic Ecology, Marine Microbiology, or Environmental Science.
- Project Associate-II (PA-II):
- M.Sc. in relevant marine/biological sciences as above, plus a minimum of 2 years of documented post-qualification research experience in oceanographic sampling, laboratory marine analytics, or data modeling.
- Emoluments: ₹35,000/- + HRA for NET/GATE qualified candidates; ₹28,000/- + HRA for others.
- Senior Project Associate:
- Master’s degree with 4 years of relevant research experience, OR Ph.D. in Marine Science / Oceanography / Marine Biology.
- Emoluments: ₹42,000/- + HRA.
Age Limit & Project Tenure
- Age Limit: Up to 35 years for Project Associate-I & II; up to 40 years for Senior Project Associate (age relaxations applicable for SC/ST/OBC and women candidates as per Government of India rules).
- Tenure: Initially for 1 year, extendable on an annual basis up to the completion of the respective sponsored research project.
