The Thad Cochran National Warmwater Aquaculture Center, located at the Delta Research and Extension Center (DREC) in Stoneville, MS, houses extensive experimental earthen pond facilities, advanced water quality analytical laboratories, nutrition pilot plants, and dedicated disease diagnostics infrastructure supporting the multi-million-dollar commercial catfish and warmwater aquaculture industries.

Research Focus & Doctoral Themes

Successful candidates will engage in applied and fundamental research addressing key challenges in aquaculture production and aquatic ecosystem management, including:

  • Aquaculture Water Quality & Biogeochemistry: Dynamics of dissolved oxygen, ammonia toxicity, algal bloom dynamics, phytoplankton control, and sediment nutrient fluxes in commercial aquaculture ponds.
  • Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) & Biofloc: System engineering, biofiltration efficiency, microbial community management, and solids removal in intensive fish production units.
  • Fish Health, Nutrition & Feed Technology: Sustainable alternative protein sources, gut microbiome characterization, immune response modeling, and non-antibiotic prophylactic treatments.
  • Aquatic Ecology & Quantitative Modeling: Bioenergetic modeling, population dynamics, harvest optimization algorithms, and sensor-based pond monitoring networks.
  • Fish Breeding & Genetics: Genetic enhancement, hybrid catfish evaluation, and stress-tolerant aquaculture strains.

Financial Support & Graduate Assistantship Benefits

Eligibility & Qualifications

  • A minimum undergraduate/graduate GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale for unconditional doctoral admission.
  • Demonstrated interest in laboratory water quality analysis, fish husbandry, field sampling, or data analysis (R, Python, or statistical modeling).
  • Strong communication and writing skills in English (TOEFL/IELTS scores required for international applicants).
  • Open to domestic (U.S.) and international graduate students.
