The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invites applications for its world-renowned Postdoctoral Scholar Fellowships in Oceanography and Marine Science (2026–2027). Offered annually, these competitive 18-month awards are designed to support promising new doctoral graduates conducting independent scientific research in ocean exploration, marine ecology, coastal hydrology, and ocean biogeochemistry.
About Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Located in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, WHOI is the world’s independent leader in ocean discovery, exploration, and education. With world-class scientific facilities, specialized deep-sea submersible assets (including the human-occupied submersible Alvin and autonomous vehicles), and leading faculty researchers, WHOI provides an unmatched collaborative ecosystem for emerging marine scientists.
Academic Departments & Research Disciplines
Fellowships are tenable across WHOI’s major research departments and collaborative ocean institutes:
- Biology Department: Marine microbiological ecology, plankton dynamics, fish behavior and sensory ecology, coral reef resilience, mammal bioacoustics, benthic invertebrate biology, and marine genomics.
- Marine Chemistry & Geochemistry (MC&G): Ocean carbon cycle dynamics, marine organic geochemistry, nutrient fluxes, aquatic isotope tracing, and marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) technologies.
- Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering (AOPE): Ocean acoustics, environmental fluid mechanics, autonomous underwater systems, marine robotics, and sensor instrumentation.
- Physical Oceanography (PO): General ocean circulation, air-sea interaction, coastal boundary layers, polar oceanography, and regional ocean modelling.
- Geology & Geophysics (G&G): Marine geodynamics, coastal and shelf sedimentology, hydrothermal vent systems, and paleoceanography.
Fellowship Award & Support
- Stipend: Highly competitive annual fellowship stipend of approximately $75,000/year.
- Operating Research Budget: Discretionary research funding allowance for laboratory consumables, field supplies, computing, and travel.
- Relocation Allowance: Relocation expense assistance provided for domestic and international fellows moving to Woods Hole.
- Duration: 18 months of continuous fellowship support.
- Benefits Package: Comprehensive group health, dental, and disability insurance coverage.
- Mentorship & Training: Individual development plans (IDPs), pedagogical training, science communication workshops, and grant writing mentorship.
Candidate Eligibility
- Open to new or recent doctoral recipients in oceanography, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, or Earth/environmental sciences.
- Candidates should have received their Ph.D. within 3 years prior to the fellowship appointment date, or expect to satisfy all doctoral requirements prior to commencement.
- International candidates from all nations are warmly encouraged to apply; WHOI provides J-1 visa sponsorship.
- Applicants must establish contact with WHOI Scientific Staff members in their area of interest before applying to ensure advisor sponsorship.
