The Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) at the University of Twente in Enschede, Netherlands, is recruiting two fully funded Ph.D. candidates under the Infrastructure Twente for Ecosystem Monitoring (ITEM) initiative.
Research Focus & Aquatic Ecosystem Scope
Remote sensing, high-tech sensors, and GeoAI are essential for tracking surface water energy budgets, coastal thermal dynamics, and aquatic ecosystem health. The two doctoral vacancies cover complementary domains:
- Position 1 (Spatial Integration for High-Tech Sensing): Integrating airborne and optical-thermal satellite observations to model radiative exchanges, surface water energy balances, and aquatic/coastal reflectance properties.
- Position 2 (Temporal Integration & GeoAI): Developing open explainable GeoAI frameworks to temporally couple Earth system models with observational monitoring across land-water interfaces.
Funding Package & Contract Terms
- Host Faculty: ITC Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, University of Twente, Enschede, Netherlands.
- Duration: 4 Years full-time doctoral appointment (40 hours/week).
- Salary: €3,059 (Year 1) to €3,881 (Year 4) gross per month, plus 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, and 41 paid annual leave days.

Candidate Requirements
- Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Remote Sensing, Meteorology, Geoinformatics, Environmental Physics, Aquatic Science, or related field.
- Strong quantitative modeling, programming skills (Python/R/C++), and experience handling satellite earth observation datasets.
- Full proficiency in scientific English.
