Dr. Nathan Dorn’s Aquatic Ecology Lab at Florida International University (FIU) in North Miami, Florida, is recruiting a fully funded PhD student in Freshwater Population and Community Ecology. The position is expected to start in Fall 2026.

Research Focus

The successful PhD candidate will conduct research on the ecology, population dynamics, and trophic interactions of freshwater communities in the Florida Everglades. Key research themes in the Dorn Lab include:

  • Invasive Species Ecology: Investigating the ecological impacts of invasive aquatic species, such as the Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus), on native communities.
  • Crayfish Ecology: Studying crayfish populations, their role as crucial trophic links, and the dynamics of native versus parthenogenetic/clonal marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis).
  • Trophic & Hydrologic Interactions: Analyzing how hydrologic variation (drought, water level fluctuations, and restoration efforts) influences predator-prey dynamics and population size of small fish and macroinvertebrates.

Funding and Support

  • Fully funded position for the duration of the PhD program.
  • Includes a competitive graduate assistantship stipend, full tuition waiver, and health insurance benefits.
  • Opportunities for collaborative research, extensive field ecology in the Everglades, and professional development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in Ecology, Biology, Fisheries Science, Aquatic Ecology, or a related field.
  • Prior field research experience in aquatic environments (fish/crayfish sampling, wetland fieldwork).
  • Strong quantitative skills, with interest or experience in statistical modeling and data analysis in R.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in team environments.

How to Apply

Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Nathan Dorn directly via email. Please provide a brief cover letter describing your research interests and experience, a current CV, and contact details for two references. For more information, visit the Dorn Lab website or the FIU Aquatic Ecology Lab page.
